Ethan and Sarah’s Hiking Proposal

Sarah and Ethan’s proposal was one of my favorite sessions of 2022. Ethan and Sarah were high school sweethearts, and also some of my best friends from high school. I was so excited when Ethan told me he was proposing and he wanted me to be the photographer.

Our first step was to scout out the location. Ethan chose to propose in John Bryan State Park in Yellow Springs, Ohio. We hiked around for a bit until we found the perfect spot: a little stream in the woods. Ethan and I prepped by adding onto the stepping stone pathway and making it easier to cross (and kneel on).

The day of the proposal, I went early to set the scene with, jars, candles, & fairy lights. Then I waited for Ethan and Sarah to arrive. I also politely warned a few hikers that a proposal was about to happen in the area soon.

When I saw Ethan and Sarah approaching, I turned away slightly so Sarah wouldn’t recognize me and know what was going on. When I heard their voices getting closer, I turned back and started shooting!

The proposal was filled with so much anticipation and love. As soon as Ethan proposed, Sarah tackled him in a huge hug. When she looked down at the ring, Ethan had another surprise for her: He proposed with Sarah’s grandmother’s ring. It was such a sweet and emotional moment.

I stepped away for a few moments so Sarah and Ethan could be alone and soak it all in. I think it’s important for couples to slow down and enjoy the moment right after getting engaged!

When they were ready, we took a few couple portraits to celebrate and document the day. We hiked along the river bed and Sarah and Ethan even adventured into the river a bit. After the proposal, Sarah and Ethan headed to announce their engagement to family.

This session was such a smooth, joyful process and so exciting to shoot. The prep beforehand made it easier for Ethan and I to relax and be in the moment.

Here are some tips for getting the most out of your proposal photos:

  • Ask if your photographer has experience photographing a surprise proposal (or a surprise anything). It can be a high pressure moment, and you want someone you can trust.

  • If you want your photographer out of sight, ask if they have a zoom lens. My zoom lens made it easy for me to go totally unnoticed during the proposal.

  • Ask if your photographer can come with you to pick a spot (they’ll appreciate it). Your photographer knows what will photograph the best. Plus, it’s best to have your photographer know the exact spot you’ll propose.

  • Ask if your photographer can send a photo of the proposal the same day. Your photographer probably has a turnaround time of a few weeks, but they might be able to send one or two photos the same day to show your friends and family.
